How to teach your kids to live a Healthy Lifestyle

Contrary to popular belief, it is not at schools that children learn about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. It is at home surrounded by their family. Parents not getting involved is not an option anymore because long-term consequences can have disastrous effects. From heart problems to diabetes, these diseases are the epidemic of the 21st century. But the good news is that there is a simple solution – prevention. If you teach your kids to live a healthy lifestyle from a young age, the advantages are numerous because it is not only their bodies that will thrive but their mental health too. And instead of it being a chore where you every day have to struggle to teach new ways of thinking, it is possible to do it by setting an example. Thus, the lessons they learn will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

The first and most vital lesson is the significance of healthy food

A balanced meal is a must for children’s development. Without it, they won’t have enough energy, and their bodies will suffer. Unfortunately, the majority of food produced specifically for kids is full of sugar. The problem with this widespread ingredient is that it gives a short boost of energy, followed by a sugar crash. However, a simple thing as fiber is enough to give a child enough energy without any health risks. In fact, there are numerous benefits to eating more salads. It improves digestion and keeps us feeling full for a long time, so there is no danger of overeating. Also, they are full of vitamins and minerals that lower the risk of future heart problems and cancers.

Unfortunately, kids hate greens. So how to teach your kids to live a healthy lifestyle and eat better? Simply by introducing tasty organic foods that are full of nutrients. Foods like berries, nuts, apples, and oranges are the best place to start. From there, slowly introduce more fiber into daily meals – baked pie with nuts or a salad with apples on the side.

Teach your kids to live a healthy lifestyle by showing them the importance of exercise

There are numerous benefits to playing. It boosts physical health, improves the immune system, teaches kids orientation, develops their imagination, not to mention social skills. And it comes so easy to them that making exercising fun for kids will not be a chore. So the first thing you can do to turn exercise into a game is to participate. Just being with you will motivate them to conquer any reservations they might have toward physical activities.

Secondly, use props, like hula hoops, soft bean bags, frisbees, and jump ropes. Teach them about the importance of warming up and stretching. A simple walk to the park or a short yoga session is enough to get them ready for more strenuous activities. And do not forget to show them the importance of hydrating. Always carry with you a bottle of water or freshly squeezed juice.

A good sleep routine improves physical and mental health

Kids of all ages need to get enough sleep, or they risk developing a range of mental and physical ailments. But sometimes, it is pretty challenging getting the young ones to bed. Therefore, you need to establish a routine and stick to it, as it will help them avoid long-term health challenges we face in old age. Reserve one hour for activities that will calm them down enough to get sleepy. A warm bath is perfect, followed by a bedtime story, will help them transition from playfulness to sleepiness.

Children of different ages need different amounts of sleep. For example, a three-year-old will need around 10 to 13 hours of sleep. And for teenagers, 8 to 10 hours is enough. However, you should limit their time on phones and tablets. A recent study found that the blue light from these devices tricks the brain into thinking it is daytime, so they need more time to fall asleep.

Teach them to use electronic devices responsibly

Today, digital devices are accessible to everyone, and nobody knows to use them better than kids. In a way, it is beneficial for their education, because they can find answers to all sorts of questions online. Also studying, even if it is a simple thing like learning a new dialect, can support their cerebrum. However, too much of anything can become harmful. That is why, to teach your kids about a healthy lifestyle, you should limit their time on electronic devices. Too much time spent online will severely impact the quality of sleep, and their social skills will suffer. Also, encourage them to spend more time outside because playing will boost their imagination. One way to do it is to set an example. Limit your own time online and spend it with them. Foster a culture where it is more fun to talk to a real person than a digital avatar.

Lead the way and do not forget to have fun

Children love spending time with their parents and will mimic everything they do. So do not expect them to exercise and eat quality food if you are not leading by example. Therefore, to teach your kids to live a healthy lifestyle, you will have to change your bad habits. However, do not spring it on them overnight and try to do it through a rigorous regime. It will only result in them rebelling against it. Instead, gradually introduce new things like veggies and exercise. Remember, routine is the key. It not only gives your child stability, but it also helps them deal with stress. Ultimately, by helping them learn a better and healthier way of life, you are investing in their future.
